Mumbai: Two passengers sustained injuries during a violent altercation that occurred late Wednesday night aboard a local train in Mumbai. The incident took place around 12:30 AM on Thursday, July 15, within the luggage coach of an Ambarnath-bound local train as it was in motion.

According to preliminary reports, the dispute began as a verbal argument between the two individuals over a seating issue. The confrontation escalated into a physical fight, resulting in both passengers sustaining head injuries. Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that neither of the individuals was carrying a sharp weapon. The injuries are believed to have been caused by a metal bangle worn by one of the passengers striking the other during the scuffle.

Personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) attended to the injured passengers at Kalyan station. Both were provided with first aid and subsequently transferred to Rukhmabai Hospital. One passenger, who suffered a more severe head injury, was later referred to Sion Hospital for advanced medical care.

The Kalyan GRP has registered a case and initiated an investigation into the precise circumstances that led to the altercation. This incident follows a series of safety concerns raised recently regarding passenger safety on Mumbai’s extensive suburban railway network.

In a separate but related security incident on the same day, brief panic spread at Kurla railway station when a man carrying a wooden stick was seen moving along Platform 1. Railway security personnel apprehended the individual, who is now in the custody of the Kurla GRP. The motivation behind this individual’s actions is currently under investigation.

These events underscore ongoing concerns about the safety of commuters on Mumbai’s lifeline, the local train system. Just last month, a 22-year-old passenger was fatally stabbed on a local train following an argument, highlighting the volatility that can erupt from seemingly minor disputes in crowded conditions. In January, a lecturer was reportedly stabbed during a similar altercation.

The Mumbai suburban railway network, which serves millions of passengers daily, has been a focal point for discussions on commuter safety, particularly during peak hours. Authorities continue to review security measures and investigate all incidents to ensure the well-being of passengers traveling on these vital routes.
