India Joins Elite Space Club as Skyroot Aerospace Successfully Launches Vikram-1

In a landmark achievement for India’s burgeoning private space sector, Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched its Vikram-1 rocket on July 18, 2026. This historic mission, codenamed ‘Aagaman’, saw the Vikram-1 rocket place multiple payloads into low Earth orbit, establishing India as the third nation globally with private orbital launch capabilities, joining the ranks of the United States and China.

The Vikram-1, a four-stage, all-carbon composite orbital launch vehicle, is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into low Earth orbit. According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Vikram-1 rocket stands approximately 22 to 24 meters tall with a diameter of 1.7 meters. Its design incorporates advanced technologies, including a 3D-printed engine and solid-fuel boosters, showcasing India’s indigenous innovation in space technology. The mission’s success is a testament to years of development and testing, building upon the foundation laid by Skyroot’s previous Vikram-S suborbital mission in 2022.

Mission Accomplished: Payloads in Orbit

The ‘Aagaman’ mission successfully deployed six payloads, including technology demonstration satellites and symbolic items such as artwork and a postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The rocket performed as planned, achieving its target orbit of approximately 450 kilometers at a 60-degree inclination. This accomplishment validated the rocket’s propulsion, avionics, and control systems, fulfilling the primary objective of demonstrating India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle.

This development is crucial for Indo-Pacific defense planners, offering a sovereign pathway for reconstituting satellite constellations in the event of regional crises.
