Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, staged a protest against the alleged detention of education reformist Sonam Wangchuk and demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister. The demonstration highlighted concerns over what protesters described as the Union Government’s “communal and fascist policies.”
The Chenab Times has learned that the protestors, carrying banners and raising slogans, gathered in Kalaburagi on Wednesday to express their strong disapproval of the actions taken against Sonam Wangchuk. They accused the government of stifling dissent and attempting to suppress individuals advocating for educational reform and environmental protection. The demonstration included symbolic acts of protest, such as the burning of an effigy representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Education Minister, along with the breaking of an earthen pot, signifying a break from what they perceive as harmful governmental policies.
Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer and education reformist from Ladakh, gained national prominence for his innovative educational initiatives and his advocacy for the protection of the Himalayan region. He recently announced his intention to undertake a 21-day ‘Climate Fast’ in Leh to protest the alleged inaction by the Union Government on environmental concerns and the impact of industrial development in Ladakh. Reports indicated that Wangchuk and other participants of his proposed fast faced restrictions and were reportedly detained, which triggered widespread condemnation and protests across various parts of the country.
The CPI(M) in Kalaburagi specifically voiced their solidarity with Mr. Wangchuk and condemned the alleged attempts by the authorities to prevent him from carrying out his peaceful protest.
