SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have detained over 1,000 Over Ground Workers (OGWs) from across the Kashmir Valley in the wake of a militant attack that resulted in the death of a police head constable in Anantnag district.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the detentions followed a coordinated, valley-wide crackdown launched by security forces and the Jammu and Kashmir police. The operations were initiated shortly after the attack, which occurred around 12:30 pm in Lal Chowk, Anantnag.
According to official sources, the raids have led to the apprehension of more than 1,000 individuals identified as OGWs. Search operations have also been intensified in various locations, with a particular focus on Anantnag district, where the attack took place. These detentions are part of broader security measures aimed at disrupting militant networks and preventing further incidents.
The deceased police officer has been identified as Head Constable Ashiq Hussain, who was on duty providing security for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. He was fatally shot by a militant in Lal Chowk, Anantnag. The incident prompted an immediate and extensive manhunt, with security forces cordoning off the entire Anantnag town in an effort to apprehend the perpetrator.
The attack drew strong condemnation from political leaders. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah both denounced the incident as a cowardly act and extended their condolences to the family of Head Constable Hussain. The Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, and Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, V.K. Birdi, visited the site of the attack to assess the security situation and review operational strategies.
The crackdown and increased security presence across the valley underscore the heightened alert status following the Anantnag incident. Authorities are reportedly focusing on intelligence-led operations to dismantle militant support structures. The detentions are expected to continue as security agencies pursue leads in the ongoing investigation.
