Himachal Pradesh Braces for Continued Heavy Rainfall; Orange Alert Issued for Key Districts

Himachal Pradesh is anticipating the continuation of heavy rainfall across the state on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the districts of Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur, signalling a high probability of intense precipitation. Additionally, a yellow alert has been put in place for Mandi, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Chamba districts, indicating a moderate risk of heavy showers.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the Meteorological Centre in Shimla forecasts that Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur are particularly likely to experience heavy rainfall throughout the day. Other districts are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall. The weather office also projected that minimum temperatures across the state would likely remain close to their normal averages. However, maximum temperatures are anticipated to decrease by 2°C to 6°C within the next 24 hours due to the prevailing weather conditions.

Current Temperature Readings Across Major Towns

Dharamshala recorded the highest minimum temperature among the major towns, with a reading of 21.6°C. Following closely were Mandi at 23.3°C and Kangra at 23°C. Bilaspur registered a minimum temperature of 24°C, while Paonta Sahib recorded 25°C. Sundernagar observed a minimum temperature of 22.4°C, and Nahan recorded 21.1°C. The town of Bhuntar recorded a minimum temperature of 19.9°C, and Solan registered 19.6°C. Further down the scale, Kasauli recorded 18°C, while Shimla and Dalhousie both recorded 16.8°C. Manali registered a minimum temperature of 16.9°C, and Kufri recorded 15°C. The coldest place in the state was Barmour in Chamba district, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 11°C, with Keylong also reporting a low of 12°C.

The IMD’s alerts are part of its systematic approach to disseminating weather-related information and warnings to aid preparedness and mitigate potential risks associated with adverse weather phenomena. The orange alert signifies that there is a high likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could lead to disruption in normal life, including potential landslides, flash floods, and damage to infrastructure.
