JAMMU AND KASHMIR: Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Kumar Sharma, has levelled serious allegations against former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of shielding the main accused in the 2012 MBBS entrance examination scam. Sharma asserted that the accused was allegedly granted an extension in service and subsequently appointed as a consultant post-retirement, despite facing charges related to the sale of examination papers.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Sharma, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, stated that Abdullah should refrain from speaking about transparency and accountability, given his government’s alleged protection of the primary suspect in the Common Entrance Test (CET)-2012 paper-selling case.
Sharma identified the main accused as Mushtaq Peer, alleging that Peer facilitated the sale of question papers for the 2012 Common Entrance Test in exchange for substantial sums of money. According to Sharma, Peer was first granted an extension in his service tenure and later appointed as a consultant for the expedited recruitment of Class IV posts. Sharma questioned the individuals responsible for approving these decisions, implying that the then Omar Abdullah-led administration had actively patronised the accused.
The opposition leader also raised concerns about the efficacy of investigating agencies that functioned under Abdullah’s leadership when he held the Home portfolio. Sharma claimed that decisive action was only initiated after the intervention of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. He referenced court proceedings where an Amicus Curiae submitted reports indicating that the JKCET-2012 question papers were being sold for large sums before the examination date.
Sharma further alleged that both the Vigilance Organisation and the Crime Branch failed to take appropriate action despite specific complaints, until the matter escalated to the High Court. He accused the former Chief Minister of exhibiting a selective recollection by focusing on later recruitment controversies while overlooking earlier allegations of malfeasance.
These accusations come in the wake of recent statements made by Omar Abdullah regarding paper leak incidents in recruitment examinations across Jammu and Kashmir. Sharma specifically mentioned that allegations of a paper leak had also surfaced during the Junior Engineer (Electrical) examination conducted in 2025, suggesting a pattern of irregularities within the examination system.
