ANANTNAG, Jammu and Kashmir – A family in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir is seeking urgent assistance after torrential rains and subsequent flash floods caused significant damage to their residence, washing away a portion of their home. The incident occurred in the Chittergul area following a cloudburst, leading to the diversion of a local stream and inundating agricultural fields, orchards, and residential areas.
According to initial assessments, the flash floods inundated homes, obliterating crops and trees. Several families, including the one in question, were forced to evacuate their residences as the water levels rapidly rose. The affected residents have appealed to the local administration and the government for immediate assessment of the damages and subsequent compensation for their losses.
The cloudburst, which occurred on Sunday evening, triggered severe flash floods in the Nala Chotihall area. The resulting deluge caused widespread destruction, with water entering homes and damaging paddy fields and apple orchards. The sudden surge of water also affected road connectivity, with a portion of the main road being washed away, disrupting movement in and around the affected villages.
Local residents described the terrifying experience of fleeing their homes as floodwaters rose rapidly. Manzoor Ahmad Khan, a local resident, stated that the cloudburst caused severe damage to farmers’ livelihoods, impacting both paddy fields and orchards. He appealed to the government for immediate assessment and compensation for the losses incurred by the community.
The district administration has mobilized emergency teams to the affected areas to assess the situation and initiate necessary relief and preventive measures. The Horticulture Department has also begun evaluating the damage to orchards. Officials have assured that a thorough assessment will be conducted to determine the extent of the losses and to facilitate compensation for the affected families.
This incident follows a period of heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir, which has led to widespread flooding and landslides in several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall, warning of potential flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas. Authorities have advised residents to avoid rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas and have stressed the importance of maintaining a high level of preparedness across all departments to mitigate potential loss of life and property.
The administration is working to strengthen embankments along vulnerable stretches of rivers and has deployed dewatering pumps in critical locations to manage waterlogging. Evacuation centers have been established to shelter nomadic families, laborers, and other vulnerable residents living near rivers and streams. Joint response teams comprising officials from various departments are stationed at strategic locations for immediate emergency response.
