The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced plans to stage a protest in Mandya, a district heavily reliant on Cauvery river water, over the ongoing water-sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu.
The Chenab Times has learned that the protest is scheduled to highlight concerns regarding the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, a decision that has sparked considerable discontent among farmers and political circles in Karnataka.
B.Y. Vijayendra, the State BJP President, articulated the party’s stance, alleging that the current state government had taken a stance detrimental to Karnataka’s agricultural interests. He specifically criticized Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who, according to Vijayendra, had previously advised farmers in Karnataka against cultivating crops due to insufficient water availability.
This advisory from the Chief Minister, Vijayendra contended, stood in stark contrast to the simultaneous release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. He accused the Chief Minister of prioritizing appeasing the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister over safeguarding the water needs of Karnataka’s own farming community.
The Cauvery water dispute is a long-standing inter-state issue that has historically led to significant tensions between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The river’s water is a critical resource for agriculture in both states, and its allocation is governed by directives from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Supreme Court of India.
Farmers in Karnataka, particularly in districts like Mandya, Mysore, and Hassan, are highly sensitive to any perceived inequitable distribution of water. They often face severe hardships during periods of deficit rainfall, making the release of water to downstream states a contentious issue. The current situation is exacerbated by inadequate monsoon performance in key catchment areas, leading to dwindling reservoir levels.
