The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a comprehensive traffic advisory, including route diversions and restrictions, in anticipation of the annual Kanwar Yatra, which commences on July 30 and concludes on August 11. Authorities are implementing extensive security measures and traffic management plans to ensure the safe and peaceful passage of an estimated lakhs of devotees expected to transit through the national capital.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the pilgrimage involves devotees carrying holy Ganga water from sources such as Gaumukh, Gangotri Dham, and Haridwar. These pilgrims will be traversing Delhi en route to various destinations within the national capital region, as well as in neighbouring Haryana and Rajasthan. The Delhi Police has significantly bolstered security arrangements across the city to facilitate smooth movement.
Traffic Restrictions and Diversions
According to an advisory issued by the Eastern Range of the Delhi Traffic Police, the movement of Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs), with the exception of city buses, will be restricted or diverted from July 30 to August 12. These restrictions will be in effect on key arterial roads including GT Road between Apsara Border and Yamuna Bridge, Wazirabad Road from Bhopura Border to Signature Bridge, Vikas Marg, Asha Ram Tyagi Marg (Road No. 66), Pusta Road, and Loni Road. Heavy vehicles will be rerouted through designated alternate corridors such as NH-9 and NH-44 to mitigate congestion and ensure unimpeded pilgrim flow.
A significant closure will impact general traffic on GT Road between Apsara Border and Yamuna Bridge. This stretch is slated to be closed for general traffic from 7 am on August 9 until 8 pm on August 12, coinciding with the expected peak movement of Kanwariyas. Additionally, the advisory explicitly states that the movement of Kanwariyas and their associated vehicles will not be permitted on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway.
Commuter Advisory and Security Intensification
Commuters travelling through the affected areas have been strongly advised to meticulously plan their journeys. They are encouraged to utilize alternative routes whenever feasible, allocate additional travel time for journeys passing through congested stretches, and adhere strictly to the directions provided by traffic personnel deployed on the ground. The traffic police also urged the public to stay informed through their official social media platforms for real-time updates and to cooperate with the implemented arrangements to ensure the successful and peaceful culmination of the annual pilgrimage.
Beyond traffic management, the Delhi Police has intensified security operations across the city. Additional police personnel have been deployed along all major routes designated for the Kanwar Yatra. These routes traverse multiple districts, including north, northeast, east, central, outer north, outer, Rohini, Dwarka, west, southwest, and south districts of the capital. Senior police officials have outlined elaborate security and traffic management blueprints designed to guarantee the secure passage of devotees entering Delhi from adjacent states.
Strategic Deployments and Inter-State Coordination
To bolster security and response capabilities, additional police contingents, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), Police Control Room (PCR) vans, and strategically positioned pickets have been deployed. Assistance camps have also been established at various points along the Kanwar routes to provide immediate support to pilgrims as and when required.
Northeast Delhi, identified as a critical zone with seven major entry points for Kanwariyas into the city, will see augmented deployments. These routes are vital from both security and traffic management perspectives, connecting to numerous other districts. A senior police officer highlighted that personnel will not be restricted by jurisdictional boundaries, and any instance where assistance is needed along the route will be met with an immediate response and coordinated efforts with the concerned district authorities.
Further enhancing preparedness, the Delhi Police has engaged in coordination meetings with police authorities of neighbouring states. These discussions aim to ensure seamless movement of devotees across state borders and to facilitate a prompt, unified response to any emergent situation. Senior officers from the Delhi Traffic Police recently conducted on-ground inspections of arrangements at Telco Point in Ghazipur and Chintamani Chowk in Shahdara district, reviewing traffic management strategies and interacting with on-duty personnel. Fire stations across the capital have also been placed on alert to address any potential emergencies during the pilgrimage period.
