Himachal Pradesh has significantly augmented its public transport fleet with the induction of 297 new electric buses, a move aimed at enhancing eco-friendly mobility across the state. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu officially flagged off these buses, which have now been distributed to various Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) depots. This latest addition brings the total number of electric buses in the HRTC’s operational fleet to 500, marking a substantial step towards modernizing its services and reducing reliance on older diesel vehicles.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the state government has ambitious plans to further expand its green transport initiative, with an additional 1,000 electric buses and 100 hydrogen-run buses set to be procured in the near future. Chief Minister Sukhu articulated that this strategic decision to invest in electric mobility aligns with the administration’s commitment to fostering self-reliance within the state. He highlighted the considerable economic advantages of electric buses compared to their diesel counterparts, stating that while diesel buses incur operational costs of approximately Rs 76-86 per kilometre, electric buses are projected to operate at a significantly lower cost of around Rs 36-38 per kilometre.
The newly inducted electric buses are capable of covering a distance of approximately 180 kilometres on a single charge. Future procurements are expected to feature buses with an enhanced range, capable of travelling up to 250 kilometres on a single charge. The Chief Minister indicated that the process for acquiring these additional electric buses is in its final stages, with tenders anticipated to be floated before the end of the current year. This phased expansion underscores the state’s dedication to a comprehensive transition towards sustainable public transportation.
In parallel with the electric bus initiative, the Himachal Pradesh government is also actively pursuing the procurement of 100 hydrogen-run buses. Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the introduction of hydrogen-powered vehicles represents a significant stride towards environmental protection and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
