Pune, Maharashtra: Two individuals sustained injuries when a speeding car collided with a roadside tree, uprooting it, in the Sangamwadi area of Pune on Thursday. Emergency services were called to the scene to rescue the occupants of the vehicle. The incident has prompted suspicion of drunk driving as a contributing factor.

The Pune Fire Brigade team, responding to the accident, reported finding liquor bottles inside the car. Passersby and motorists at the scene assisted in rescuing one of the occupants before the arrival of emergency personnel. The driver, however, remained trapped inside the vehicle with his leg caught between the steering wheel and the door.

Firefighters from the Yerawada and Kasba fire stations, in collaboration with police and local citizens, conducted a rescue operation. They utilized a manual spreader and ropes to free the driver’s leg. Both injured individuals were subsequently handed over to the police and transported for medical treatment.

According to preliminary police statements, both occupants of the car appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The vehicle, a white Toyota with registration number MH12 YH 5569, sustained extensive damage. Further investigations are underway to determine the precise cause of the crash and to confirm the role of alcohol.

This incident follows a pattern of recent events in Pune where drunk driving has been suspected or confirmed in accidents causing injury and damage. In one such case reported on May 31, 2025, multiple individuals were injured when a car, driven by an individual confirmed to have consumed alcohol, collided with a group of people. Another incident on October 8, 2023, involved a drunk driver who crashed his car into a tree after colliding with other vehicles.

Authorities have repeatedly cautioned against the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, emphasizing the severe risks to the driver, passengers, and other road users. The ongoing investigation into Thursday’s Sangamwadi accident is expected to provide a clearer picture of the circumstances leading to the collision and the extent of any impairment.
