Gurugram’s ambitious Global City project, a large-scale mixed-use township spearheaded by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC), is poised for significant development with the planned integration of a comprehensive network of highways. This strategic enhancement aims to bolster connectivity to major National Capital Region (NCR) arteries, ensuring smoother access and anticipating future traffic demands as the township expands.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the township will now be directly linked to the Dwarka Expressway, National Highway 48 (NH-48), which serves as the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Pataudi Road, and the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway. These multi-route access points are designed to mitigate potential traffic congestion, a critical consideration for a project of this magnitude, especially as it scales up its operations and residential capacity.
To facilitate direct access to the Dwarka Expressway, a grade-separated interchange coupled with an underground link is under construction. Furthermore, a new, wide arterial road is being developed near Narsinghpur to establish a direct connection to NH-48. Connectivity to Manesar and the KMP Expressway will be strengthened through Pataudi Road, further integrating Global City into the regional transportation infrastructure.
Project Scope and Investment Potential
The mixed-use township is being developed across an expansive area of approximately 1,000 acres, situated within Sectors 36, 36B, 37, 37A, and 37B along the Dwarka Expressway corridor. Initially announced in 2019, the project experienced a period of stagnation before being revitalized and re-launched by the state government in 2023. Global City is being positioned as the prospective Central Business District for the entire NCR, attracting an estimated investment potential of Rs 1 lakh crore, approximately $15 billion. Upon full operationalization, it is projected to create more than five lakh employment opportunities, marking it as a significant economic driver for the region.
Phased Development and Future Milestones
Work on the initial phase of the Global City project commenced last year, with a targeted completion date set for the end of 2026. The full realization of the township’s development is envisioned to extend through 2035. The project has already garnered attention for several high-profile developments. Notably, Haryana recently allocated a 6.7-acre plot within Global City for the construction of a proposed 620-700 metre mixed-use tower. Should this structure be built as planned, it would ascend to the status of India’s tallest building, surpassing Mumbai’s Palais Royale and drawing comparisons to international architectural marvels such as Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.
Expert Perspectives on Connectivity and Sustainability
Urban transport experts have emphasized the strategic importance of multiple entry and exit points for large greenfield projects, arguing that reliance on a single highway can lead to considerable congestion. They highlighted that robust connectivity not only eases traffic flow but also aids in emergency response services and enhances freight movement efficiency. However, these experts also issued a cautionary note, stating that road-widening initiatives alone are insufficient to guarantee sustainable mobility. They advocated for parallel investments in mass transit systems, as well as the development of infrastructure catering to pedestrians and cyclists, to ensure a well-rounded and future-proof urban environment.
Officials have indicated that a substantial portion of the project’s first phase has already been completed, with the remaining elements scheduled for completion within the next year. Industry experts believe that the enhanced connectivity infrastructure is likely to further stimulate real estate investment in the surrounding sectors. Nevertheless, they reiterated that the long-term success of Global City will ultimately hinge on holistic and climate-resilient urban planning, extending beyond mere road network improvements.
