Residents and shopkeepers in Jalandhar Cantonment have staged protests against the installation of Army barricades at several intersection roads, restricting access within the cantonment area.
The demonstration took place outside the Cantonment Board office on Wednesday, with protesters issuing a two-day ultimatum for the removal of the barricades. They warned of a larger protest if their demands were not met.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the protesters voiced concerns over the inconvenience and disruption caused by the barricades, which they claim hinder daily movement and access to local markets and residential pockets. Shopkeepers have reported a decline in business due to reduced footfall.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Shubhi Angra and Brigadier Kapil Sood met with the agitated residents and shopkeepers in an effort to de-escalate the situation. They attempted to explain the security rationale behind the deployment of the barricades, citing potential security threats. Both officials requested time from the protesters to thoroughly review the security concerns and explore possible solutions.
The protest has garnered support from local political leaders, who have publicly backed the residents’ demands and called for a swift resolution to the issue. These leaders have indicated their intention to raise the matter with higher authorities, emphasizing the need to balance security requirements with the daily needs of the civilian population residing within the cantonment.
Discussions are underway between the Cantonment Board authorities, Army officials, and civilian representatives to find a mutually agreeable arrangement. The primary objective is to ensure the security of the cantonment area while also facilitating the normal lives and livelihoods of the residents and shopkeepers. The outcome of these discussions is anticipated to bring relief to the affected community.
