In Ludhiana, Punjab, a Class XII student allegedly slapped his school principal outside Government Senior Secondary School (Boys) in Machhiwara after being reprimanded for his appearance, which included tattoos and an “inappropriate” hairstyle. The incident occurred on Wednesday, prompting an inquiry and the student’s subsequent expulsion.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the principal, Niranjan Kumar, had previously advised the student to maintain school decorum and adhere to a simpler haircut. The student reportedly refused to comply and later displayed tattoos on his body, further escalating concerns among school staff.
According to school officials, teachers had attempted to counsel the student, emphasizing the importance of appearance and academic focus. However, the student allegedly became argumentative when his tattoos were questioned, leading to the matter being reported to the principal.
Principal Kumar then confronted the student, sternly instructing him on discipline and the need to heed teachers’ advice. Upset by the repeated admonishments, the student allegedly waited for the principal to leave the school premises on Wednesday, intercepted him on a public road, and physically assaulted him. A video capturing the assault circulated on social media platforms before being removed.
District Education Officer Dimple Madan confirmed that an inquiry team has been constituted to investigate the incident. She stated that full details would be available within a couple of days, noting that the altercation took place outside the school grounds.
Following the assault, Principal Kumar reportedly filed a formal complaint with the local police. In response to the complaint and the disciplinary issues, the school administration summoned the student’s parents and decided to expel him from the institution. The police have launched a search for the student, who is reportedly absconding.
Campus manager Narinder Singh reiterated that the student’s hairstyle was deemed unsuitable and that Principal Kumar had been persistently asking him to get a more conventional haircut, which the student ignored. Singh added that the student’s non-cooperative attitude was further demonstrated when he acquired tattoos.
The school’s disciplinary committee and teachers consistently advised students to maintain a modest appearance and prioritize their studies. The student’s defiance of these guidelines, culminating in the physical confrontation with the principal, has led to significant disciplinary action.
