Monsoon Weakens After Promising July, Yellow Alerts Issued for Heavy Showers
Himachal Pradesh, which experienced a six per cent surplus in rainfall during July, is now projected to see a weaker monsoon season in August and September, with most areas likely to receive below-average precipitation. Despite this overall forecast, specific districts like Lahaul and Spiti, Chamba, Kinnaur, and Kullu may still experience above-average rainfall during these months.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the State Meteorological Centre has forecasted below-normal rainfall across the majority of the state for the upcoming two months. In August specifically, most districts are anticipated to record less than average rainfall, with only Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti potentially seeing precipitation above the normal levels. Concurrently, both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain higher than usual throughout most regions of Himachal Pradesh.
In the immediate term, the Meteorological Department has issued yellow alerts, signalling the possibility of heavy rainfall across the state until August 8. For August 3, a yellow alert has been put in place for Kangra, Chamba, Bilaspur, and Sirmaur districts, where isolated locations could experience significant downpours. Light rainfall is expected in the remaining parts of the state during this period.
Recent precipitation data from the past 24 hours indicates that light to moderate rainfall was recorded in several locations. Paonta Sahib received the highest amount with 58.4 mm, followed by Bilaspur which recorded 40 mm. Solan registered 30.6 mm of rain, Shimla received 17 mm, and Dharamshala recorded 4.1 mm during the same period.
Temperature readings across various stations highlight the current climatic conditions. Shimla recorded a maximum temperature of 22.5°C, while Dharamshala registered 30°C. Manali reported 28.2°C, Solan 28.7°C, and Kangra recorded 31.7°C. Mandi’s maximum temperature was 33.2°C, Sundernagar 32.9°C, and Bilaspur 32.5°C. Kufri recorded 20.1°C, Keylong 27°C, Kalpa 24.6°C, Nahan 30°C, and Chamba 30.5°C.
Una registered the highest maximum temperature in the state at 35°C. In contrast, Kukumseri in the Lahaul and Spiti district recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 12.8°C, indicating significant diurnal temperature variations across the state.
The monsoon season in India typically spans from June to September. While July offered a respite with surplus rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, the projected decrease in August and September could have implications for agriculture and water resources in the region. The state’s economy is heavily reliant on its agricultural sector, and timely and adequate rainfall is crucial for crop yields. Water bodies and reservoirs also depend on consistent precipitation to maintain their levels, which are vital for drinking water supply and hydroelectric power generation.
