The Delhi government’s ambitious Delhi Lakshmi Yojana has garnered a significant response from women across the national capital, recording over 5.14 lakh registrations within the first seven days of its launch on August 1. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, a substantial 2,18,728 applications have been formally submitted following initial registration.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta hailed the scheme’s reception as unprecedented, attributing the high numbers to the growing trust of women in the government’s initiative aimed at their economic empowerment. She stated that no previous government scheme had achieved such a record number of registrations in such a brief period, describing the public response as historic.
By Saturday afternoon, the total number of women who had registered under the scheme reached 5,14,460. Of these, 4,36,316 beneficiaries had progressed to providing their district or Assembly constituency details, while 78,144 individuals were yet to furnish this specific information. Preliminary district-wise data reveals that the North-East district recorded the highest number of registrations, with 73,676 women signing up, closely followed by the North-West district with 55,700 and the West district with 44,358 registrations. In contrast, the New Delhi district registered the lowest number, with 5,573 individuals enrolling.
The Chief Minister emphasized the Delhi government’s commitment to fulfilling its electoral promise of achieving the economic empowerment of women. She expressed that the widespread enthusiasm demonstrated by women signifies the scheme’s potential to bring about positive transformations in the lives of millions of families across the city.
“The enthusiasm and trust with which women have embraced the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana is proof that the scheme will bring positive change to the lives of millions of families,” she stated, underscoring the impact envisioned by the initiative.
The Delhi Lakshmi Yojana is designed to provide eligible women with financial assistance amounting to Rs 2,500 per month. Beneficiaries have been offered two distinct options for receiving this support. Under the first option, Rs 1,000 will be disbursed through a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) wallet, intended for daily expenses. The remaining Rs 1,500 will be deposited into a Recurring Deposit (RD) or Fixed Deposit (FD) account. The second option allows beneficiaries to have the entire Rs 2,500 deposited into an RD/FD account, thereby encouraging long-term savings habits.
The government has outlined that the scheme’s implementation is being managed through a robust, technology-driven system. This system encompasses the entire process from application submission and document verification to eligibility assessment, approval, integration with the Public Financial Management System (PFMS), banking services, and ultimately, the disbursement of payments. Each application will undergo a rigorous four-level scrutiny and approval process to ensure accuracy and compliance.
