Srinagar Police have apprehended a repeat offender accused of defrauding businessmen and shopkeepers through fraudulent schemes and impersonation across the Kashmir Valley.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the accused has been identified as Ubaid Maqbool Khawaja, son of Maqbool Ahmad Khawaja, a resident of Gomal Chek, Tangdar, currently residing in Habib Colony, Alochi Bagh. His arrest is in connection with FIR No. 45/2026, lodged at Police Station Maharaj Gunj under Sections 318(4) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police reports indicate that Khawaja has allegedly duped numerous traders throughout the Valley. Multiple complaints have been filed against him from various districts, and he is already implicated in existing cases at several police stations. These include FIR No. 76/2022, registered under Section 430 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Police Station Kothibagh, and FIR No. 83/2023, filed under Sections 201, 379, 416, and 430 IPC at Police Station Pulwama.
Authorities further stated that the accused had previously been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) due to his consistent involvement in criminal activities. The investigation is ongoing to uncover his wider network and determine his potential involvement in other fraud cases, as stated in the official police release.
