The body of an 18-year-old man, who was swept away in a drain in Delhi’s Sarita Vihar area amid heavy rainfall, was recovered from the Agra Canal approximately 40 hours after the incident. The young man, identified as Ankit, a resident of Bhim Colony in Ali Village, was returning home from Noida on Friday evening when he slipped and was washed away by the strong current in the Priyanka Camp Nala.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Rain
Search and rescue operations were immediately launched by the police, the District Disaster Management Authority, and the Delhi Fire Service. However, the extensive efforts were hampered by continuous heavy rainfall and the strong flow of water in the drain. Despite these challenges, rescue teams managed to locate and retrieve Ankit’s body from the Agra Canal.
The incident occurred on Friday evening near the Priyanka Camp nala in the Madanpur Khadar area, which falls under the Sarita Vihar police station limits. Ankit was reportedly attempting to cross the drain by walking on its edge when he lost his balance and was pulled into the fast-flowing water. His friend, Manish, who was present at the time, witnessed the incident and alerted the authorities.
No Foul Play Suspected
Following the recovery of the body, a post-mortem examination was conducted. Police have stated that no foul play has been detected in connection with the death. The body was subsequently handed over to Ankit’s family.
The heavy monsoon rains in the Delhi-NCR region have led to significant waterlogging and an increased flow in drains and water channels across the city. This incident highlights the dangers posed by swollen drains during periods of intense rainfall. Authorities have been working to manage the impact of the monsoons, but such tragedies underscore the risks faced by residents during adverse weather conditions.
In a separate incident, an unidentified man who fell into a drain in the Bijawasan area on Thursday has not yet been found, indicating ongoing challenges with rescue operations in the city’s extensive drainage system.
