Mumbai cricketer Sarfaraz Khan, having shed 17 kilograms and undergone rigorous training sessions in Kashmir, is now prepared to represent India in the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, commencing on August 15. His inclusion in the squad follows an injury to Sai Sudharsan, opening a crucial window for the Mumbaikar who has been awaiting such an opportunity for the past two years.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Sarfaraz Khan had previously expressed his determination on social media, stating, “I may not fit in, but I’ll fight with everything I’ve got.” This sentiment now appears to be materializing as he makes his return to the Test squad after a challenging period. The recall comes at a critical juncture for the batsman, who has diligently worked on his fitness, significantly reducing his weight over the last eighteen months to meet the demands of international cricket.

Despite a notable triple century in the Ranji Trophy, Sarfaraz Khan had previously faced perceptions of being slightly overweight for the rigours of international competition. His current leaner physique is expected to enhance his performance, particularly in the shorter formats, while also contributing to his overall game. A significant part of his recent preparation involved extensive training at the Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium in Kashmir. This decision was prompted by the seasonal rains in Mumbai, which frequently disrupted regular training schedules, making the facilities in Kashmir a viable alternative for skill refinement.

The comeback marks a significant moment for Sarfaraz, especially after his challenging experience in the 2024 Test series against New Zealand. Despite widespread failures across the team, he was one of the players who faced repercussions. Following that series, he traveled to England where he scored 92 runs for India ‘A’ in an unofficial Test against England Lions and also registered a century in an intra-squad game. However, a return to the senior national team remained elusive until India’s subsequent performance against South Africa, which reportedly prompted the team management to reconsider their options.

Sources indicated that the team management had shown interest in Sarfaraz Khan prior to the second Test against South Africa. However, the selection committee at that time was not inclined to recall him. With Sai Sudharsan’s recovery from a right big-toe injury still ongoing, the national selection committee evaluated several candidates. Ruturaj Gaikwad, with a first-class average in the mid-40s, and the less experienced Shaikh Rasheed, primarily a number three batsman, were among the options. The most logical choice, according to selectors, was Sarfaraz Khan, widely regarded as an adept player of spin bowling, standing alongside captain Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant in the current squad’s spin-playing abilities.

The article also highlighted concerns regarding Dhruv Jurel’s recent struggles against spinners in senior national team matches. This has raised questions about his suitability as a pure batter against Sri Lanka in the upcoming series. Jurel, who captained India ‘A’ in Sri Lanka last month and achieved a century and a half-century in the ‘A’ team Tests, was dismissed cheaply in a recent practice game while attempting to defend against an off-spinner. His known difficulties playing off-spinners, notably highlighted by his dismissals against South Africa’s Simon Harmer, suggest that Sarfaraz Khan’s inclusion offers a more robust option in the middle order.

Sarfaraz Khan is noted for his extensive range of strokes, including effective conventional and reverse sweeps, which he can deploy effectively both in front of and behind the square. This versatility makes him a valuable asset against diverse bowling attacks. Following the Indian Premier League, Sarfaraz participated in the Mumbai T20 league, where he delivered several impactful performances for Akash Tigers Western Mumbai Suburbs. Upon the onset of the monsoon season in Mumbai, he relocated to Kashmir for his training. There, he focused on honing his skills by facing net bowlers and members of the state team. Additionally, he utilized astro-turf wickets at the MCA Indoor facility and private facilities in the Kurla area, dedicating long hours to batting on used and under-prepared red-soil tracks to maintain peak performance against slow bowlers.

As Sarfaraz Khan integrates into the squad, India will be looking to his batting prowess to counter the Sri Lankan spin attack, led by Prabath Jayasuriya, when the first Test begins in Galle.
