Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir is forecast to experience intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers across the region over the next ten days, with the Meteorological Department warning of potential brief intense and heavy showers at scattered locations. The weather pattern is expected to persist until August 22.
Meteorological Department Issues Forecast
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Director of the Meteorological Department, Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that several districts have already recorded significant rainfall in the past 24 hours. Poonch registered 53 mm, Pulwama recorded 57.5 mm, Awantipora received 47.8 mm, and Rajouri measured 44 mm of rainfall.
The forecast indicates that on August 12, many parts of Jammu and Kashmir will likely see light to moderate rain and thundershowers. These could include brief periods of intense and heavy rainfall in a few districts, primarily from the afternoon into the evening.
From August 13 to August 15, the weather is predicted to remain similar, with light to moderate rain and thundershowers anticipated at numerous locations. Brief intense showers might occur at a few places during the early morning, morning, and again in the late afternoon to evening hours.
Alert Issued for Heavy Showers and Associated Risks
A more significant pattern of weather is projected between August 16 and August 19. During this period, several spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected across many areas. The department has specifically warned of the possibility of heavy rain and brief intense heavy showers in a few districts, particularly during the early morning and afternoon.
The advisory issued by the Meteorological Department highlights that these heavy rainfall events could trigger flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, especially in areas identified as vulnerable. The Jammu division is particularly at risk of torrential downpours and brief intense heavy showers, while one or two districts in the Kashmir division might experience intense brief showers.
From August 20 to August 22, the intensity of the rainfall is expected to decrease, with light rain and thundershowers likely at scattered places across the Union Territory.
Advisory for Vulnerable Areas
Director Mukhtar Ahmad urged people, especially those residing in vulnerable and hilly terrains, to exercise caution and adhere to official advisories issued by authorities during periods of heavy rainfall. This advisory aims to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety in light of the predicted weather conditions.
