Two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.5 and 4.3, struck the Ladakh region on Thursday, causing concern among residents but resulting in no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the first tremor, a stronger one measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at 6:05 am. Its epicentre was recorded in the Leh area at a depth of 10 kilometres. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the coordinates as 36.88 degrees north latitude and 74.402 degrees east longitude.
Approximately four hours later, at 9:54 am, a second earthquake was registered. This tremor measured 4.3 in magnitude and also occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. The NCS located its epicentre within the Leh region as well, at 36.76 degrees north latitude and 75.326 degrees east longitude.
The geographical proximity and the relatively short interval between the two seismic events have heightened awareness of geological activity in the Union Territory. Ladakh is situated in a seismically active zone, making it prone to earthquakes. The region’s mountainous terrain and geological makeup contribute to its susceptibility to tremors.
Authorities have not received any reports of injuries or significant damage to infrastructure following these earthquakes. Emergency services remain on alert, and residents have been advised to stay informed through official channels. The National Centre for Seismology continues to monitor seismic activity across the country, particularly in regions like Ladakh known for their geological vulnerability.
