Three leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) died and two others narrowly escaped a fatal accident when their car plunged into a pond near Bassian village, close to Raikot in Ludhiana district, in the early hours of Thursday. The incident occurred approximately 12 km from Jagraon.

The Chenab Times has learned that the deceased have been identified as AAP leaders Balkar Singh, Vishal, and Sandeep. They were travelling from Nakodar to Dirba when the vehicle reportedly lost control and veered off the road, entering a pond around 1:15 am. The impact of the plunge resulted in the deaths of the three individuals at the scene.

Upon receiving distress calls, local police and rescue teams were swiftly mobilized and dispatched to the location. Efforts were immediately undertaken to retrieve the occupants of the submerged vehicle. The bodies of the three AAP leaders were successfully recovered from the pond. The two surviving passengers managed to escape the vehicle and were reportedly uninjured, though in shock following the harrowing experience.

The Sadar Raikot Station House Officer, Hira Singh, confirmed the fatalities and the number of survivors. He stated that an investigation into the precise cause of the accident has been launched. Preliminary inquiries are exploring various possibilities, including whether the car may have been involved in a collision with another vehicle before it plunged into the pond. Such details are crucial for reconstructing the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

Sources close to the Punjab government indicated that the deceased were known associates of Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. The news of the accident sent shockwaves through the party ranks, with many expressing grief and offering condolences to the families of the victims. The party is expected to issue a formal statement on the matter.

The recovered vehicle was reportedly extensively damaged as a result of the plunge and submersion. Forensic teams are expected to examine the vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation to ascertain any mechanical failures or external factors that may have contributed to the loss of control. Road conditions and potential visibility issues during the early morning hours are also being considered.

Accidents involving vehicles plunging into water bodies are a recurring concern in various regions, often attributed to factors such as driver fatigue, speeding, adverse weather conditions, or poor road infrastructure. Authorities have often stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and driving cautiously, especially during nighttime or in areas with known hazards. The specific circumstances surrounding this incident near Raikot will be thoroughly investigated to provide clarity and potentially inform future safety advisories.

The political landscape in Punjab has seen the Aam Aadmi Party rise to prominence in recent years, forming the government with a significant mandate. The loss of three party leaders in such a tragic manner represents a significant blow to the local party unit. Further details regarding the ongoing investigation and any potential findings are anticipated in the coming days as authorities piece together the events that transpired on Thursday morning.
