A brief spell of rain on Friday afternoon highlighted Ludhiana’s persistent waterlogging issues, submerging numerous roads, underpasses, and low-lying areas just a day before the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the rainfall was not uniform across the city. While some localities experienced showers, others remained largely dry, catching many residents and commuters off guard. Those without umbrellas or raincoats scrambled for shelter as the unexpected downpour intensified.
Several underbridges and low-lying road sections became inundated, compelling commuters to reduce speed or seek alternative routes. Reports of waterlogging emerged from areas including Model Town, Shastri Nagar, Gurdev Nagar, and Haibowal, with significant water accumulation observed on major thoroughfares as well.
Traffic Disruption and Commuter Woes
The situation was particularly acute on Ferozepur Road. At Aarti Chowk and Hero Bakery Chowk, a considerable number of two-wheeler riders were seen stopping under flyovers and overbridges to escape the rain, creating long queues along the roadside. Some commuters, however, braved the conditions and continued their journeys despite being drenched.
The sudden shower also caused disruptions for parents collecting their children from schools. Many individuals sought refuge under flyovers and shop awnings, waiting for the intensity of the rain to subside. Traffic flow was hampered on various stretches as vehicles navigated through accumulated rainwater. Two-wheeler riders faced added challenges, with passing cars often splashing them with water.
Despite the inconvenience, some residents were observed enjoying the sudden cool respite, while others proceeded with their travel after being soaked.
Civic Body Urged to Address Drainage Issues
The rain, which lasted for approximately half an hour, saw water levels receding in many locations shortly after it stopped. However, the rapid accumulation of water remains a significant concern for residents, who noted that even short periods of rain were sufficient to flood underpasses and several roads.
Residents expressed dismay, recalling repeated assurances from the Municipal Corporation regarding monsoon preparedness, which included claims of desilted drains and cleaned sewerage lines. They appealed to the civic body to ensure that roadside drainage points are consistently kept clear and functional to facilitate swift rainwater drainage.
With the monsoon season expected to bring more rainfall, the public is calling on civic authorities to prioritize identifying waterlogging-prone areas and implementing preventive measures. The focus, they urged, should be on proactive solutions rather than reacting to problems that arise with each rain spell.
