The twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad resonated with patriotic fervor as residents marked the 80th Independence Day on Saturday, August 15, 2026. Celebrations spanned across various government institutions, educational establishments, and public spaces, with the national flag being hoisted with customary zeal. Private residences and commercial hubs also joined in the festivities, displaying the tricolor with pride.
A common sight across the city roads was the presence of national flags mounted on motorcycles, four-wheelers, and auto-rickshaws, with many pillion riders seen waving the flag, reflecting the collective spirit of national pride. Important junctions in the twin cities were adorned with tricolor buntings, and prominent locations were illuminated with decorative lights at night, adding to the festive atmosphere.
At the Idgah Maidan, in accordance with Supreme Court directives, Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Commissioner Rudresh Ghali led the flag-hoisting ceremony. The event was attended by several councillors and civic officials. The significance of the day was further amplified as it coincided with the birth anniversary of Sangolli Rayanna, a prominent freedom fighter and associate of Kittur Rani Chennamma. Dignitaries, political leaders, and members of various organizations paid floral tributes to his statue at Brindavan Circle, honoring his contributions to India’s independence struggle.
District-level celebrations were held at the R.N. Shetty Stadium in Dharwad, while a taluk-level event took place at Nehru Stadium in Hubballi. Addressing the gathering at the taluk-level celebration, Hubballi Urban Tahsildar Mahesh Bhagavanth Gaste emphasized that Independence Day serves as an occasion to reaffirm citizens’ commitment to national development, social equality, environmental protection, and ethical values. He urged citizens to actively contribute towards nation-building.
Hubballi-Dharwad Central MLA Mahesh Tenginakai highlighted ongoing development initiatives in the region and called upon citizens to play their part in building a developed India by 2047. Students from various schools and colleges presented vibrant cultural programs and skits, captivating the audience and reinforcing the patriotic spirit of the day. The ‘Tiranga Run,’ organized by the district administration in association with the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation at Unkal Lake, also drew significant participation, further adding to the celebratory mood.
Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department displayed the tricolor at Unkal Lake, complemented by Mallakhamba performances by students. Various organizations also conducted processions and rallies, fostering a sense of unity and patriotism. Many commercial establishments, hotels, and restaurants decorated their premises and offered special Independence Day discounts to customers.
