A homicide investigation is underway in Fairfax County, Virginia, after a woman was discovered stabbed to death in a parking area near hiking trails in the Great Falls area on Monday morning. Fairfax County Police Department officers responded to the 8800 block of Georgetown Pike at approximately 7 a.m. following a report from a community member who was out for a morning run.

According to Fairfax County Police Department Capt. Jason Chandler, commander of the public affairs bureau, the person who discovered the scene reported seeing a woman lying unconscious outside her vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found the woman with trauma to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been publicly released, and authorities have not confirmed if she was a resident of Fairfax County or the immediate area.

The incident occurred in a parking area that provides access to several trails. Detectives have secured the scene and are actively canvassing the area for potential witnesses and surveillance footage that could shed light on the circumstances leading up to the woman’s death. A section of Georgetown Pike was temporarily closed to facilitate the investigation.

Chandler stated that there is no immediate indication that the incident was a random act, but he urged anyone who was in the vicinity around 7 a.m. on Monday to contact the police. Investigators are particularly interested in any information that could help establish a timeline or identify who may have been present in the area at the time. The motive behind the stabbing remains unclear, and it is not yet known if the victim knew her attacker or if the vehicle at the scene is connected to the crime.
