SRINAGAR: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir of the Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir has filed a chargesheet against a resident of Budgam for allegedly attempting to influence an ongoing investigation by transferring money into the bank account of an investigating officer.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the chargesheet was presented before the Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Srinagar. The accused, Ghulam Ahmad Ganie, son of Ghulam Mohammad Ganie, a resident of Mirgund in Budgam, faces charges under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 228 and 229 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The EOW initiated the case following a written complaint alleging that Ganie, who is himself an accused in a previous case (FIR No. 11/2021) registered with the Crime Branch Kashmir (now EOW Kashmir), transferred an amount of Rs 10,000 into the bank account of an investigation officer. Investigators stated that the transfer was made with the specific intent of bribing the officer and thereby influencing the probe into the earlier case.
Following the complaint, a preliminary investigation was launched. During this probe, allegations were thoroughly examined, and relevant evidence was collected. The EOW stated that the investigation established the accused individual’s alleged involvement in the attempted bribery, leading to the subsequent filing of the chargesheet before the court for judicial determination.
The EOW Kashmir has also issued an advisory to the public, urging citizens not to offer or pay bribes to public servants in exchange for securing any favour or service. The wing encouraged the public to report any demands for bribes or other corrupt practices to the competent authorities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining transparency and integrity in public dealings.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Jammu and Kashmir to combat corruption and ensure accountability within investigative processes. The Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provide the legal framework for prosecuting individuals involved in such activities, aiming to uphold public trust in governmental institutions.
The chargesheeted individual will now face legal proceedings where the prosecution will present evidence to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The court will then review the presented evidence and make a final judgment on the matter. The ongoing investigation into the earlier case (FIR No. 11/2021) for which Ganie is an accused is proceeding separately.
