Srinagar, August 19: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has called for the withdrawal of the highest-level travel advisory against visiting Kashmir, asserting that its removal would significantly benefit the region’s tourism sector and its dependent families.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that ahead of the scheduled visit of the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, to the Valley, Ms. Mufti highlighted the detrimental impact of the current travel advisory on Kashmir’s economy.

Speaking on the matter, the former Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir stated that for Kashmir, where thousands of families rely on tourism for their livelihoods, the existing travel advisory serves as more than just a warning; it acts as a barrier isolating the region from the global community.

Ms. Mufti expressed her views via a post on the social media platform X, where she directly addressed the US Ambassador. She urged Ambassador Gor to review and rescind the advisory, emphasizing its adverse effects on the region’s economy.

She further elaborated that lifting the advisory would send a strong signal of confidence in the security situation and would be instrumental in encouraging the return of international tourists. This action, she added, would provide much-needed relief to the numerous families whose economic well-being is intrinsically linked to the tourism industry.

The PDP chief reiterated that the advisory, which categorizes Kashmir as a destination requiring significant caution for travel, negatively impacts visitor numbers and consequently, the economic prospects of local businesses and residents engaged in tourism-related activities.

Her appeal comes at a time when efforts are underway to revive and boost tourism in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a sector that has historically been a major contributor to its economy. The withdrawal of such advisories is often seen as a key step in fostering a positive perception and encouraging foreign investment and tourism.

The visit of the US Ambassador is anticipated to be a significant event, offering an opportunity for diplomatic engagement and on-ground assessment of the situation in the Valley. Ms. Mufti’s call suggests a desire to ensure that the Ambassador’s visit is complemented by a tangible step towards normalizing perceptions and facilitating economic recovery.

Tourism stakeholders in the region have frequently voiced concerns about the impact of travel advisories on their businesses, highlighting the need for a reassessment based on the prevailing ground situation. The appeal by Ms. Mufti aligns with these sentiments, underscoring the economic ramifications of such travel directives.
