Regular coffee intake is associated with reduced body fat and enhanced muscle mass, along with distinct differences in sex hormone levels, a study conducted in Finland has indicated. These findings suggest that coffee may influence metabolism in ways beyond its well-known stimulating effects.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that researchers from the University of Oulu, as part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study, analysed data from 2,264 individuals aged 46. The study examined participants’ typical coffee consumption habits and correlated them with measurements of body composition, metabolic health indicators, circulating metabolites, and sex hormone levels.
Key Findings on Body Composition and Metabolism
The research revealed that individuals who reported higher coffee consumption generally exhibited lower total body fat and reduced visceral fat. Concurrently, these participants displayed greater skeletal muscle mass. Notably, these observed differences persisted even when participants with varying coffee intake levels had comparable body mass indexes (BMI).
Furthermore, a higher intake of coffee was linked to lower concentrations of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in both men and women. Elevated levels of BCAAs have previously been associated with insulin resistance and a heightened risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This suggests a potential metabolic benefit of coffee consumption in mitigating factors related to insulin sensitivity.
Hormonal Associations and Gender Differences
The study also identified distinct differences in hormone profiles, particularly among male participants. Increased coffee consumption in men was linked to a more favourable glucose-insulin profile, higher levels of total and bioavailable testosterone, and elevated levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Conversely, levels of free testosterone and the free androgen index were found to be lower in this group.
Among women, the hormonal associations related to coffee intake were less extensive. Higher coffee consumption in women was primarily associated with increased SHBG and reduced measures of free androgens. These findings highlight potential gender-specific hormonal responses to regular coffee drinking.
Implications and Future Research
Luca Verroest, the lead author of the study and a doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, commented on the significance of the findings. “Coffee is consumed by millions of people every day, yet we still know surprisingly little about how it relates to our metabolism and hormones,” Verroest stated. “What stood out in our findings was a distinct hormonal signature that didn’t disappear even after we took into account BMI and lifestyle factors, with several of these associations differing between men and women.”
The researchers suggested that these hormonal changes might offer insights into previously observed correlations between coffee consumption and a reduced risk of metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. However, they cautioned that the study’s observational nature means it cannot definitively establish a causal relationship between coffee consumption and the observed biological differences. The findings originate from Finland, a country with one of the highest per capita coffee consumption rates globally, averaging approximately 11.8 kilograms per person annually.
The study, titled “Associations of habitual coffee intake with testosterone and cardiometabolic markers: the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study,” was published in the European Journal of Nutrition. The researchers emphasised the need for further investigation, including experimental and human intervention studies, to ascertain whether coffee directly induces these changes and to identify specific compounds responsible for such effects.
