New Delhi: The Indian government is reinforcing its commitment to educational empowerment for Scheduled Caste students through the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Post-Matric Scholarships. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive financial assistance to eligible students pursuing post-matriculation and post-secondary education across the country.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating significant budgetary allocations and expenditures under this vital scheme. The Revised Budget Estimate for the scheme stood at ₹5,400 crore for the fiscal year 2023-24, projected to rise to ₹5,500 crore in 2024-25 and ₹6,000 crore in 2025-26. Correspondingly, the actual expenditure for these periods was reported at ₹5,475.42 crore, ₹5,581.52 crore, and ₹6,208.08 crore, respectively, demonstrating a consistent and substantial financial commitment.
The Central assistance released to States and Union Territories has also seen considerable figures, amounting to ₹5,475.43 crore in 2023-24, ₹5,562.26 crore in 2024-25, and ₹6,186.95 crore in 2025-26. These releases are dynamic, reflecting the demand-driven nature of the scheme and are based on the verified scholarship requirements submitted by the respective implementing authorities in each state and Union Territory.
A significant reform implemented since the 2021-22 academic year is the direct disbursement of the Central share of scholarship funds. This mechanism utilizes Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring that the scholarship amounts are credited directly into the Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts of the beneficiaries. This approach has streamlined the fund flow, making it simpler, faster, and more transparent in delivering scholarships to deserving students.
The post-matric scholarship scheme operates on an open-ended, demand-driven model. The release of the Central government’s share is contingent upon the respective State Government or Union Territory Administration fulfilling its financial obligation by releasing its share and uploading the finally verified data of eligible beneficiaries onto the National Scholarship Portal. This ensures accountability and proper utilization of funds.
States and Union Territories serve as the primary implementing agencies responsible for the scheme’s execution. The central government actively engages with these stakeholders to review and address any issues that may arise during implementation, particularly concerning delays in scholarship disbursal. These regular reviews aim to facilitate the timely processing and release of benefits to all eligible students, ensuring that educational aspirations are not hindered by administrative bottlenecks.
The government’s continued efforts underscore a dedication to fostering equitable access to higher education for all sections of society. By strengthening and refining support mechanisms like the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme, the administration aims to empower Scheduled Caste students to pursue their academic goals and contribute effectively to the nation’s development.
