POONCH/JAMMU: A 68-year-old pilgrim from Bihar died due to cardiac arrest while participating in the ongoing Budha Amarnath yatra in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident occurred on Friday, August 20, officials reported.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the deceased was identified as Dinesh Prasad, a resident of Belaganj in Gaya district, Bihar. He was part of the pilgrimage route when he experienced chest discomfort during the intervening night of August 20 and 21.

Following the onset of his symptoms, Prasad was transported to the District Hospital Poonch. He arrived at the facility around 12:15 am, where medical personnel pronounced him deceased. Officials confirmed that the cause of death was attributed to cardiac arrest.

The Budha Amarnath yatra commenced on August 17 from Jammu, inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on August 28. The yatra is an annual religious event that attracts devotees from various parts of the country to the Budha Amarnath shrine in the Poonch district.

Pilgrims undertaking long journeys, particularly in challenging terrains and varying weather conditions, are often advised to undergo medical check-ups before embarking on such expeditions. The high altitude and physical exertion involved in pilgrimages can pose risks for individuals with pre-existing health conditions, including cardiovascular issues. Authorities typically arrange for medical facilities and personnel along the yatra routes to provide immediate assistance to pilgrims in case of emergencies.

This year’s yatra aims to facilitate the spiritual journey for thousands of devotees who travel to pay homage at the shrine. The administration has been coordinating security and logistical arrangements to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage. The death underscores the importance of health advisories and preparedness for pilgrims undertaking arduous journeys.

The Budha Amarnath shrine, located in the Mandi tehsil of Poonch district, is a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus. The trek to the shrine involves traversing mountainous paths, and the pilgrimage season often coincides with periods of intense heat or monsoon rains, depending on the time of year.

Official sources indicated that all necessary formalities, including the completion of medical documentation and liaison with the pilgrim’s family, would be undertaken by the local administration. The body of the deceased will likely be repatriated to his native place in Bihar following the post-mortem examination and completion of legal procedures.
