Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – Omar Abdullah, a prominent political figure from Jammu and Kashmir and a key ally of the Congress party, has strongly defended Rahul Gandhi’s performance as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Abdullah’s remarks come amidst discussions and some criticism regarding the leadership within the INDIA bloc and Gandhi’s role in opposing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Srinagar, Abdullah asserted that Rahul Gandhi is fulfilling the expectations placed upon him as the opposition leader. He emphasized that the fundamental role of an opposition leader is to question the government and hold it accountable, a task he believes Gandhi is actively undertaking. “Rahul Gandhi is doing what the country expects from him. It is the job of the Opposition leader to question the government and make it answerable. Rahul Gandhi is doing that,” Abdullah stated.
Abdullah further elaborated on the responsibilities of an opposition leader, questioning the basis of criticism against Gandhi. He posed a rhetorical question, asking what more could be expected from Gandhi if he is consistently challenging the government and the BJP. “If the Opposition leader does not oppose, then what is the use of it?” he remarked, underscoring that Gandhi’s actions align with the duties of his position.
The comments from Abdullah come at a time when there has been internal discussion within the INDIA bloc regarding its leadership structure. While some voices, like veteran Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar, have suggested alternative leadership, Abdullah has firmly backed Gandhi. He made it clear that any decisions regarding the leadership of the INDIA bloc would be made through consensus among all alliance members and that no formal discussions on leadership change have taken place.
Abdullah also addressed the practice of applying different standards to political leaders, particularly concerning opposition figures. He noted that while questioning the government is a core function, sometimes opposition leaders face scrutiny for performing these very duties. “I have not heard you ask the Opposition leader of Jammu and Kashmir why you ask questions again and again in vain. When he does it, you enjoy it. When Rahul Gandhi does it, you say, why is he doing it?” he said, advocating for a consistent evaluation of all opposition leaders.
His support for Rahul Gandhi highlights the ongoing political dynamics within the national opposition landscape, with Abdullah emphasizing the importance of robust opposition in a parliamentary democracy. He expressed a desire for Gandhi to continue his role, stressing that consistent questioning and accountability are vital for the health of the democratic process in India.
