Srinagar is set to welcome a unique new attraction with the opening of the Valley’s first ‘Wonder Garden’. Located at the Polo Ground Park, this innovative space has been developed by the Jammu and Kashmir Floriculture Department with a focus on sustainability, repurposing decades-old office waste, fallen wood, and discarded machinery into over 35 artistic installations. The garden is a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,” aiming to demonstrate how materials long considered waste can be imaginatively transformed into appealing and functional public spaces.
A Commitment to Sustainability and Creativity
The ‘Wonder Garden’ transforms discarded materials into art, emphasizing environmental conservation and responsible reuse. Mathoora Masoom, Director of Floriculture Kashmir, stated that the department has repurposed materials from its own gardens and offices, ensuring that no new items were purchased for the project. Visitors can expect to see creative installations such as a train made from fallen wood, planters fashioned from old tires, and flower vases created from discarded electric kettles. Old poles dating back to the 1980s, unused wheelbarrows, and a discarded tractor have also been given a new lease of life as part of the garden’s displays.
Officials highlighted that the garden offers more than a conventional floral experience. Its distinctive focus on recycled materials aims to draw attention to the broader importance of conservation, showing visitors how waste can be transformed into something visually striking and purposeful. The initiative seeks to foster a stronger culture of recycling throughout the Valley and encourage visitors, particularly younger generations, to adopt more sustainable habits.
Expanding Srinagar’s Green Landscape
The ‘Wonder Garden’ is expected to become another popular destination for tourists, complementing Srinagar’s existing portfolio of gardens and recreational spaces. By blending beauty, creativity, and sustainability, the project aims to inspire visitors to reconsider the potential of discarded materials. The Floriculture Department also aims to introduce and conserve tree species that have become less common in public parks, adding to the garden’s ecological and educational value. The introduction of species like Persian Lilac and Ginkgo Biloba is intended to enhance the garden’s appeal throughout the year.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to manage urban waste effectively in Srinagar. The city, facing increasing waste generation due to its growth as an urban and tourist hub, has been dependent on its single landfill site at Achan. Projects like the ‘Wonder Garden’ signify a shift towards more sustainable waste management practices, focusing on reuse and recycling to create valuable public spaces and promote environmental awareness.
