Srinagar, August 21, 2026 – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the ‘Waste to Wonder – Flower Garden’ and a Floriculture Mela in Srinagar on Friday. The event, held at Floriculture Park in Polo View, aimed to promote creativity, reuse, and recycling while showcasing the region’s horticultural potential.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the ‘Waste to Wonder’ garden is a unique initiative developed by the Floriculture Department. It features a variety of artistic installations created from discarded and scrapped materials, including a vintage Ambassador car, a Kashmiri tonga, a floral boat, a scooter, a heritage jeep, a tractor, and old tires. These reclaimed items have been imaginatively transformed into decorative garden features, demonstrating how waste can be given a new life. The garden is designed to be an all-season attraction, planned to offer continuous blooms from spring through late autumn. Its development is based on the principles of Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse (RRR), with approximately 90 percent of the materials sourced through recycling and refurbishment.

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Abdullah emphasized the garden’s message of sustainability and creative reuse. He highlighted that the initiative serves as a powerful demonstration of how discarded objects can be repurposed with imagination, addressing the growing challenges of solid and plastic waste management. Abdullah suggested that the Floriculture Department study similar initiatives in Chandigarh to explore further development of the concept in Jammu and Kashmir, potentially enhancing tourism attractions.

The Floriculture Mela, also inaugurated by the Chief Minister, provided a platform for flower growers, nursery owners, and floriculture enthusiasts from various districts of Kashmir. Exhibitors showcased a wide range of floral varieties and products, including ornamental plants, herbal plants, pots, terrariums, floral decor, cut flowers, and related machinery. The event facilitated an exchange of best practices and explored commercial opportunities within the floriculture sector. The Chief Minister interacted with stall owners, appreciating their innovative business models and encouraging the expansion of their activities.

Abdullah also took the opportunity to discuss the further development of the Chrysanthemum Garden, noting that lessons learned from its first season could inform improvements for the second. He drew a parallel with the development of Srinagar’s Tulip Garden, suggesting a similar phased expansion and enhancement for the Chrysanthemum Garden.

The initiative underscores the region’s potential in floriculture, with the government actively promoting the sector through various schemes and training programs. The cultivation of aromatic crops like lavender, as part of the ‘Aroma Mission,’ has already shown promise in transforming the livelihoods of farmers in areas such as Bhaderwah. The Floriculture Department in Jammu and Kashmir has been working to develop open spaces, enhance flower crop production, and diversify the sector with a focus on cut flowers and protected cultivation.

The Waste to Wonder Garden and the Floriculture Mela highlight the broader efforts to harness the potential of floriculture in Jammu and Kashmir for socio-economic development, creating employment and income generation opportunities, particularly for the youth.
