Chinese humanoid robots have achieved a significant milestone, shattering human records in athletic events, including the 100-meter sprint and high jump, at the opening of the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the five-day event, now in its second year, has attracted over 2,000 humanoid robots and features 51 disciplines, showcasing China’s advancements in robotics amid a competitive technological landscape with the United States.
The games are being held at the National Speed Skating Oval, a venue used for the 2022 Winter Olympics, and coincide with the 2026 World Robot Conference, where numerous robotics companies presented their latest innovations.
China currently leads the global production of humanoid robots, a sector that has drawn increased scrutiny from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, which recently imposed import bans citing national security concerns. The Pentagon has also identified Chinese robotics companies with alleged ties to the military.
During the opening ceremonies, hundreds of robots demonstrated synchronized formations, signaling a large-scale display of coordinated robotic movement. The athletic competitions saw humanoid robots achieve results that surpassed existing human world records.
In the 100-meter sprint, a humanoid robot recorded a time of 9.39 seconds, exceeding the previous human record of 9.58 seconds set by Usain Bolt in 2009. In the standing high jump, a robot reached a height of 2.88 meters, significantly surpassing the human record of 2.45 meters established by Javier Sotomayor in 1993.
These record-breaking robots were developed by Beijing-based X-Humanoid. Prior to the official opening, a robot from Chinese company Honor completed a 100-meter sprint during a trial in 9.32 seconds, reaching a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second.
Despite these impressive athletic feats, experts note that humanoid robots are largely confined to demonstrations, performances, and research, with widespread real-world deployment still some time away. Spectators at the event expressed awe at the rapid pace of development in humanoid robotics.
Li Yanfeng, a Beijing resident and education worker, commented on the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, acknowledging an initial apprehension about AI’s potential to displace humans but expressing a desire to witness the advancements firsthand. Yang Shangzheng, another attendee, found it remarkable that robots could now perform human athletic activities.
The World Humanoid Robot Games includes 16 participating countries and features a variety of other events such as weightlifting and tug-of-war, underscoring the global nature of robotic development and competition.
