A search and rescue operation is currently underway in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir after a young boy was feared drowned in the Nallah Sindh on Sunday. The incident occurred near Qamaria Park, where the boy, a resident of Bamloora, was reportedly bathing when the mishap took place.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the local police were alerted immediately after the incident. A coordinated search and rescue effort was promptly launched, involving police personnel, members of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local residents. The operation aims to locate the boy and ascertain the circumstances leading to his disappearance in the river.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events that resulted in the drowning scare. This incident marks the second such occurrence in the district within a span of three days, highlighting a concerning trend of water-related accidents in the region.
Earlier on Friday, a teenager from Srinagar had drowned in the same Nallah Sindh near the Kijpora area of Kangan. His body was recovered after two days of extensive searching efforts, underscoring the challenges and dangers associated with navigating the district’s waterways.
The Nallah Sindh, a significant river in the Kashmir Valley, originates from the Kolahoi Glacier and flows through various districts, including Ganderbal. Its currents can be strong and unpredictable, particularly during periods of increased glacial melt or rainfall, posing risks to those who venture near or into its waters. Local authorities have, on numerous occasions, issued advisories urging the public to exercise extreme caution near rivers and streams.
The rescue teams are employing various techniques to cover the affected stretch of the river. Divers are actively involved in the search, navigating the riverbed and downstream areas in hopes of finding the missing boy. The involvement of local villagers in the rescue operation also reflects the community’s deep concern and willingness to assist in times of crisis.
The police have stated that further details will be released as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available. The focus remains on the immediate rescue efforts while also gathering evidence to prevent similar incidents in the future. The proximity of the incident to a public park like Qamaria Park raises questions about the safety measures in place and the supervision of children near water bodies.
In light of these recent tragedies, residents of Ganderbal and surrounding areas are being urged to remain vigilant and to strictly adhere to safety guidelines when near rivers and streams. The community has expressed solidarity with the affected family and is anxiously awaiting updates from the rescue teams.
