Nilgiris Collector Urged Against Using Dam Water for Power Generation Amidst Water Scarcity Concerns

In the picturesque Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, a critical appeal has been made to the District Collector, urging a halt to the utilization of remaining water in local dams for power generation. This plea arises amidst growing concerns over water scarcity, highlighting a potential conflict between energy production and the essential water needs of the region and its downstream communities.

The call to conserve water in the Nilgiris dams comes from various stakeholders who are apprehensive about depleting reserves. While hydropower generation is a vital component of Tamil Nadu’s energy strategy, particularly in areas like the Nilgiris which houses significant hydropower installations, the current situation demands a careful assessment of priorities. Tamil Nadu has a substantial installed capacity for hydroelectric power, with the Nilgiris district alone contributing a significant portion, estimated at 833 MW out of the state’s total of 2321.90 MW. Projects like the Kundah Hydroelectric Power Scheme and various pumped storage projects in the region have historically leveraged the natural elevation and water resources of the hills. These projects are crucial for meeting peak power demands and ensuring grid stability across the state.

However, the ecological sensitivity of the Nilgiris and its role as a water catchment area for major river basins, including the Bhavani and Moyar, necessitate a balanced approach. The region’s wetlands, Shola forests, and springs are critical for maintaining water flow throughout the year, even during dry spells. Recent reports and observations indicate a decline in water levels in reservoirs and a reduction in the flow of streams, attributed partly to changing climate patterns and altered land use, including deforestation and agricultural practices. This has led to concerns about the long-term sustainability of water availability for drinking, irrigation, and environmental needs.

The urgency to conserve water in the Nilgiris dams is amplified by the fact that these water bodies are not just sources for power generation but also play a crucial role in supplying water to downstream districts. The effective management of these reservoirs is paramount to ensuring water security for a large population and supporting agricultural activities that are integral to the economy of Tamil Nadu.
