Mexican authorities have arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting social media influencer Cesar Gastelum during a livestream in August. The killing, which was captured on video, has drawn renewed attention to the dangers faced by online personalities in Mexico, particularly in regions heavily affected by cartel violence.
The suspect was apprehended in Puebla state, according to Omar Garcia Harfuch, Mexico’s Security Minister. The arrest operation involved a confrontation where police officers were attacked by three armed individuals. One attacker was killed, and the alleged gunman responsible for Gastelum’s death, along with another individual, were taken into custody. Authorities stated that a preliminary investigation suggests the influencer’s killing was linked to his social media posts, which alluded to a faction of a criminal group.
Cesar Gastelum, who had over 500,000 followers on TikTok, was attacked on August 4 while participating in a social media challenge with friends in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state. Dressed as a food delivery worker, Gastelum was live-streaming when a motorcycle carrying two individuals stopped beside him. The pillion rider then shot Gastelum in the head before they fled the scene. The incident occurred in a busy area near the Sinaloa prosecutor’s office.
Sinaloa is a region known for its intense conflict between rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, which has led to widespread violence. The state has become an epicenter for this cartel conflict, with thousands killed or missing in the ongoing struggle for control. The Mexican government has deployed additional troops to the region in an effort to contain the violence, though significant challenges remain.
The targeting of influencers in Mexico has become a recurring concern. In recent years, several social media personalities have been murdered, with some killings explicitly linked to their online content or alleged connections to criminal organizations. Authorities later arrested Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, a leader linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, in connection with her murder, which was reportedly orchestrated after she ended a relationship with his son.
In January 2025, pamphlets were reportedly dropped in Culiacan threatening numerous artists and YouTubers for alleged dealings with a warring faction of the Sinaloa drug cartel, highlighting the perceived risks associated with online commentary and affiliations in the region. The government under President Claudia Sheinbaum is continuing efforts to address the pervasive criminal violence that has plagued the country.
