SRINAGAR: Ghulam Hassan Khan, a former minister in the Jammu and Kashmir government and a prominent political figure, passed away on Saturday evening in the Shopian district of south Kashmir after a prolonged illness.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Khan, who was a former leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness. His passing marks the end of a political career that spanned several years, during which he served in significant capacities within the regional administration.
Khan was first elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2002. Following his electoral success, he was inducted into the state cabinet, where he served as the Minister of State for Social Welfare. This portfolio allowed him to oversee key social welfare initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the region’s residents.
Later in his political journey, Khan parted ways with the Peoples Democratic Party. He contested the assembly elections in 2008 as an independent candidate, demonstrating his individual political standing. His electoral contests and political affiliations reflected the dynamic and often complex political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
The former minister was a resident of Shopian district, and his funeral prayers were scheduled to be held in his ancestral graveyard located in the same district. His death was mourned by political colleagues and members of the community, who remembered him for his contributions to public service.
