The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has granted in-principle approval for the alienation of 3.34 acres of land belonging to AIIMS Mangalagiri for the construction of the E-13 Road Extension Corridor. This project is critical for improving connectivity between the E-13 Road and National Highway 16 in Andhra Pradesh.
The Ministry has directed the district administration to expedite the process of handing over 10 acres of alternative land to AIIMS Mangalagiri as compensation for the land being utilized for the road project. This decision, taken in the public interest, aims to enhance infrastructure and facilitate smoother transportation in the Mangalagiri-Guntur region.
Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, stated that the Centre, the state government, and the district administration are collaborating to resolve land-related issues for the project. Once completed, the E-13 Road Extension Corridor is expected to significantly improve road connectivity, leading to faster transportation and better infrastructure for the public.
In addition to the 3.34 acres for the E-13 Road, the Union Health Ministry has also instructed authorities to coordinate with concerned officials to complete the demarcation and handover of an additional 6.04 acres from the approximately 183 acres initially allotted to AIIMS Mangalagiri by the state government. These measures are part of a broader effort to address land-related challenges and facilitate development projects.
The E-13 road project is part of a larger initiative to develop multiple road links to Amaravati, the capital region of Andhra Pradesh. Officials have indicated that the E-13 road, connecting NH-16 via AIIMS to Amaravati, is anticipated to become a vital link to the capital. The state government is focusing on strengthening alternative connectivity to Amaravati to meet growing traffic and transport demands.
The development of the AIIMS Mangalagiri campus itself has seen a steady progression. The institution was allocated an initial 183 acres, with the Andhra Pradesh government later announcing the allocation of an additional 10 acres. The institute has garnered national recognition, ranking eighth among AIIMS institutions nationwide within a few years of its establishment.
Previous efforts to improve accessibility to AIIMS Mangalagiri have also been noted. In July 2025, the Centre approved the conversion of an existing entry ramp on National Highway 16 into a fully operational exit ramp, reducing the travel distance to the hospital from 4.66 km to 1.26 km. This move was aimed at saving critical time for emergency services and patients. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways also approved the installation of directional signboards along NH-16 to guide vehicles to the hospital.
The land alienation for the E-13 Road Extension Corridor underscores the ongoing efforts to balance the development of critical healthcare infrastructure with urban planning and connectivity needs in Andhra Pradesh. The coordinated efforts between the central government, state authorities, and local administrations are crucial for the successful implementation of such projects.
