India and Germany have strengthened their environmental cooperation by signing a Joint Declaration of Intent aimed at conserving and promoting the wise use of wetlands of international importance. This significant agreement, inked during the 4th Indo-German Environment Forum (IGEF), signifies a renewed commitment to enhancing scientific collaboration and sharing best practices in crucial wetland management strategies.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the declaration was a key outcome of the 4th IGEF, which serves as the principal bilateral platform for environmental policy dialogue between the two nations and has been in existence since 2008. The forum provides a high-level avenue for discussions and decisions on pressing environmental issues and collaborative initiatives.
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasized India’s profound regard for its environmental partnership with Germany, highlighting the sustained and expanding nature of their bilateral cooperation across various facets of environmental governance. He addressed the forum, stating that environmental sustainability can no longer be addressed in isolation and stressed the imperative of international collaboration to foster a climate-resilient future. Minister Yadav pointed out that India’s developmental trajectory has demonstrated that ambitious environmental goals and robust economic growth are not mutually exclusive objectives. He further noted that India has consistently met its commitments under its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) ahead of schedule, underscoring the considerable environmental transformation currently underway within the country.
The minister also brought attention to the significant challenge of decarbonizing energy-intensive industries, such as steel, cement, and chemicals, during the forthcoming phase of industrial transition. He urged the forum to prioritize strengthening the foundation of knowledge and empirical evidence to support informed environmental decision-making. This includes advancing practical and scalable solutions for climate action, safeguarding biodiversity, enhancing resource efficiency, and bolstering institutional capacities for effective implementation of environmental policies and programs.
German Minister for Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Carsten Schneider, acknowledged India’s rapid advancements in renewable energy, characterizing the nation as a global role model. Schneider affirmed that both India and Germany share a common objective of ensuring that sustainable development progresses in tandem with economic prosperity. He welcomed the expanded cooperation in areas of climate adaptation and wetland protection, outlining plans for joint projects and the mutual exchange of knowledge and experiences between the two countries.
