The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the aircraft as a Piper PA-30. According to the FAA, the flight originated at Page Field in Fort Myers and was en route to South Bimini Airport in the Bahamas. The pilot reportedly declared an emergency while in flight and had received clearance to land at Boca Raton Airport before the aircraft went down in the ocean approximately two miles east of the airport.
