Air India announced on Friday the termination of services for the pilot-in-command of a Phuket-Delhi flight after the individual tested positive for a psychoactive substance. The decision was made shortly after a preliminary report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) highlighted the pilot’s drug use as a significant concern and recommended regulatory action.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating the airline’s firm stance on safety protocols. Air India stated that in accordance with its zero-tolerance policy towards breaches of safety, fitness, or regulatory requirements, the pilot’s employment was terminated with immediate effect.
The incident that led to the investigation occurred on August 4, when the A320 aircraft operating the Phuket-Delhi route experienced a sudden and substantial loss of altitude. The flight, carrying 145 individuals, descended nearly 300 feet, resulting in injuries to several passengers. The flight was cruising at an altitude of 36,000 feet at the time of the event.
The preliminary report from the AAIB detailed that the aircraft encountered a near-simultaneous failure of all three hydraulic systems. This critical malfunction led to an autopilot disconnect, a brief stall warning, and the significant altitude upset that caused injuries to 24 passengers. The report emphasized the gravity of the situation, particularly in relation to the pilot’s condition.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to take appropriate measures following the AAIB’s findings. Aviation safety is a paramount concern, and incidents involving substance use by flight crew are treated with the utmost seriousness by regulatory bodies and airlines globally.
