India has successfully placed its first imaging satellite, EOS-05, into a geosynchronous orbit, marking a significant achievement for the country’s space program. The launch, carried out by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket, successfully inserted the over 2,300 kg satellite into its intended orbit approximately 18 minutes after liftoff from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh.
The Chenab Times has learned that Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists on this pivotal success. In a message shared on the platform X, Shah stated, “Congratulations to @ISRO scientists as GSLV-F17 successfully carried EOS-05 into orbit. India now has its first-ever imaging satellite operating from geosynchronous orbit.” He further highlighted India’s progress under the current leadership, noting, “Under the leadership of Modi Ji, India is emerging as a self-reliant and ambitious nation, harnessing the power of its industry for its space programs.”
The EOS-05 satellite is described as the “eye in the sky” and is expected to provide real-time imagery, offering crucial support for sectors such as agriculture and disaster management. This successful mission is also seen as a recovery following the unsuccessful GSLV-F10/EOS-03 mission in 2021, with the GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission serving as its replacement.
The successful deployment of EOS-05 into its sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit demonstrates ISRO’s enhanced capabilities in launching heavier payloads into precise orbits. The satellite’s operationalization from a geosynchronous orbit will provide continuous monitoring and data acquisition over a fixed geographical region, enhancing the nation’s observational capacity.
