Scientists Uncover Vast New Biodiversity in Pacific Ocean Depths
Marine biologists have identified a significant number of previously unknown species in unexplored regions of the Pacific Ocean, highlighting the immense biodiversity hidden beneath the waves and underscoring the need for conservation efforts. Expeditions to deep-sea seamounts and the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) have revealed dozens of new species, including entirely new families and superfamilies, expanding the known tree of life.
Recent deep-sea research expeditions in the Pacific Ocean have led to the discovery of numerous new species, with scientists estimating that well over 100 potentially unknown species have been found on the Salas y Gómez and Nazca ridges alone. These findings were the result of explorations utilizing advanced underwater robots capable of descending to depths of over 4,500 meters (14,760 feet). The creatures identified include a diverse array of marine life, such as cactus urchins, squat lobsters, ancient corals, and translucent “glass” squids. Researchers also documented a bright red fish using its fins to move across the seafloor, resembling a walking motion. These discoveries are currently undergoing genetic analysis to confirm their status as new to science. The expeditions, often funded by organizations focused on ocean conservation, have explored numerous seamounts, some for the first time, revealing each underwater mountain to be a distinct ecosystem with unique inhabitants.
In a separate but related discovery, researchers have announced the identification of 24 new species of deep-sea amphipods from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the central Pacific Ocean. This significant finding includes the discovery of an entirely new superfamily, indicating a substantial gap in previous understanding of deep-sea evolutionary branches. The CCZ is a vast area spanning six million square kilometers between Hawaii and Mexico, and much of its biodiversity remains undocumented. This research forms part of larger initiatives aimed at cataloging marine life, with a goal to describe 1,000 new species by the end of the decade. The newly identified amphipods include both predators and scavengers, and the discoveries push the known depth boundaries for these creatures. Among the notable findings are a new family, Mirabestiidae, and superfamily, Mirabestioidea, highlighting new evolutionary pathways. Two new genera, Mirabestia and Pseudolepechinella, were also identified.
The extensive deep-sea exploration efforts have also yielded other remarkable findings. Scientists aboard a Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition off the coast of Chile believe they have discovered more than 100 new species living on seamounts. These include deep-sea corals, glass sponges, sea urchins, amphipods, and squat lobsters. Rare creatures such as “flying spaghetti monsters” (Bathyphysa conifera) and Casper octopuses (genus Grimpoteuthis) were also observed. The first-ever footage of a live Promachoteuthis squid, a genus known mostly from dead specimens collected in the late 1800s, was captured. These expeditions have significantly increased the known species count in the Southeast Pacific region studied, more than tripling the documented number prior to 2024.
Further research in the Pacific’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone has indicated that potentially over 5,000 previously unknown species inhabit the seabed in this region. This vast, mineral-rich area, lying thousands of meters below the surface, was largely a mystery regarding its biodiversity until recent explorations. The newly discovered organisms include an array of marine life such as sponges, crustaceans, worms, corals, and transparent sea cucumbers, many of which are adapted to survive extreme conditions of pressure, temperature, and darkness. These findings are particularly relevant given ongoing discussions and potential plans for deep-sea mining in these areas, raising concerns about the potential loss of biodiversity before it can even be understood.
The scientific community emphasizes that describing these newly discovered species is a critical step in understanding the rich biodiversity of areas like the CCZ and in communicating effectively about the unique fauna. The work undertaken by institutions like the National Oceanography Centre and the University of Lodz, often involving collaborations with early-career scientists, contributes to broader initiatives like the International Seabed Authority’s Sustainable Seabed Knowledge Initiative (SSKI). Naming new species often involves drawing inspiration from researchers, their families, or even pop culture, with some species being named after the scientists involved in their discovery.
