Srinagar, September 7: The inaugural International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK) commenced on Monday, drawing acclaimed filmmakers and industry professionals to the valley. Among the distinguished guests, renowned director Vidhu Vinod Chopra expressed his emotional connection to the event, describing it as a “homecoming” and reminiscing about his childhood and education in Kashmir.
IFFJK Opens with Star-Studded Lineup
The first-ever IFFJK, scheduled from September 7 to 10, aims to establish a significant platform for cinematic excellence, cultural exchange, and the promotion of filmmaking and creative tourism in the region. The festival is set to showcase 135 films from 41 countries, selected from over 1,100 submissions. India leads the representation with 64 films.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the festival has curated an impressive roster of attendees, including filmmakers, producers, cinematographers, curators, and educators from both India and abroad. Veteran directors Ramesh Sippy and Vidhu Vinod Chopra are attending as special guests. Chopra, a native of Jammu and Kashmir, is celebrated for his directorial works such as “3 Idiots,” “PK,” and “Mission Kashmir.” The festival also features an eminent jury comprising Santosh Sivan, Dorothee Wenner, Keiko Bang, and Himansu Sekhar Khatua, whose extensive experience spans various facets of cinema.
Reviving Cinema’s Connection with Jammu and Kashmir
The IFFJK is envisioned as a landmark cultural initiative by the Department of Information and Public Relations, Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to celebrate cinema and provide a space for filmmakers to connect and collaborate. The festival’s organization is expected to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir’s position as a destination for filmmakers and cinephiles worldwide. Actors Fatima Sana Shaikh, Imtiaz Ali, and Pankaj Tripathi are also among the notable figures participating in the event.
Addressing young local talent, Chopra encouraged them to believe in their abilities. Actor Fatima Sana Shaikh highlighted the importance of such cultural festivals in bringing people together and providing opportunities for youth engagement. She also emphasized the role of regional cinema in showcasing local culture and artistry, suggesting that the international festival could foster more film shoots in the region.
Festival Details and Awards
The festival boasts a prize purse of Rs 96 lakh distributed across nine award categories, including Best Film, Best Director, and awards for acting and technical crafts. The Best Film award comes with a Rs 25 lakh prize, with other categories offering substantial amounts to recognize cinematic achievements.
