Residents of Shimla are anticipating an end to intermittent water shortages, with the Shimla Municipal Corporation targeting the establishment of a 24×7 drinking water supply system within the city by November.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan has issued directives to the officials of the Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) to expedite the necessary measures for achieving this objective.
Currently, the city experiences water distribution on an alternate-day basis. However, a significant number of wards, including Kachi Ghati, are reportedly receiving water only after intervals of four to five days, leading to substantial inconvenience for the local population. This situation has been a recurring concern, particularly during peak seasons.
Officials from SJPNL have stated that focused efforts are underway to ensure a minimum of 40 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of drinking water is supplied to the city. This volume is deemed sufficient to prevent shortages and meet the daily demands of Shimla’s residents.
The overarching goal of this initiative is to enhance the dependability of the water supply infrastructure and to address the persistent issue of uneven distribution that has affected various areas across Shimla for an extended period. The project involves upgrades to the existing water infrastructure, including pipelines and storage facilities, to ensure efficient delivery.
The target of November for achieving 24×7 supply signifies a critical deadline for the municipal authorities and the SJPNL. Success in this endeavour is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for Shimla’s inhabitants, especially given the city’s status as a prominent tourist destination, where consistent utility services are paramount.
The municipal corporation has acknowledged the challenges in implementing such a comprehensive system, including the geographical complexities of Shimla and the maintenance of aging infrastructure. However, the commitment remains firm to overcoming these obstacles and delivering a reliable water service.
Discussions have also been held regarding the modernization of water treatment plants and the implementation of advanced monitoring systems to detect leaks and wastage in real-time. These technological interventions are considered crucial for the long-term sustainability of the water supply system.
The Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited is reportedly working in coordination with various government departments and technical experts to ensure that all regulatory and quality standards are met throughout the project’s execution. The procurement of materials and deployment of skilled manpower are also in advanced stages.
Residents have expressed hope that the proposed improvements will bring an end to the recurring water crises that have plagued the city, especially during the summer months when water demand escalates due to increased tourism and population.
