India is set to significantly expand its participation in the global skills landscape by debuting in eleven new skill categories at the 48th WorldSkills Competition, scheduled to take place in Shanghai, China, from September 22 to 27, 2026. This marks a substantial enhancement of the nation’s presence at the prestigious international event.
The Chenab Times has learned that Team Skill India will compete across 63 out of the 64 available skills, fielding a contingent of approximately 70 participants. This extensive representation will be one of India’s largest and most diverse showings at WorldSkills to date, reflecting a growing commitment to showcasing national talent on a global stage.
The eleven new skills in which India will make its first appearance include Dental Prosthetics, Digital Interactive Media Design, Intelligent Security Technology, Landscape Gardening, Optoelectronic Technology, Retail Sales, Unmanned Aerial Systems, Industrial Mechanics, Software Testing, Heavy Vehicle Technology, and Aircraft Maintenance. The inclusion of these diverse fields signals a maturing skilling ecosystem in India, extending beyond traditional trades to encompass advanced technological and specialized service areas.
This strategic expansion into new skill categories is being orchestrated under the auspices of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is spearheading India’s preparations for the WorldSkills competition, fostering close collaborations with a broad spectrum of industry partners, training institutions, and domain experts across the country.
Ms. Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, MSDE, articulated the significance of India’s expanded participation. She stated that the debut in these new skills underscores the evolution of India’s skilling initiatives, moving towards capabilities that are future-oriented and globally relevant. Secretary Mukherjee emphasized that through robust partnerships and meticulous preparation, the nation aims to empower its youth to compete with confidence and benchmark their abilities against international standards.
The newly introduced skill categories represent emerging areas that are poised to shape the future of work. These include advancements in healthcare technologies, digital design methodologies, intelligent systems, drone technology applications, sophisticated manufacturing processes, modern mobility solutions, and customer-centric service models. India’s focus on these domains aligns its skill development efforts with evolving global industry demands, creating promising avenues for youth in internationally recognized skill areas.
Support for the preparation in these novel categories is being provided by a collaborative network comprising specialized training institutions and industry leaders. Key contributors include the Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC) in Karnataka, Metrowoods Landscape, NAMTECH in Gandhinagar, Bennett University, Croma, Titan Company Ltd – Tanishq, Shoppers Stop, Reliance Trends, SANY Heavy Industry India Pvt. Ltd., Prakhar Software Solutions Ltd., and Denexpert Dental Lab, among others.
India’s performance at global skill competitions has demonstrated a consistent upward trajectory. From ranking 29th in 2015, the nation improved to 13th position in 2024 at the WorldSkills Competition. Further strengthening its international standing, India secured the 8th rank in Asia at WorldSkills Asia 2025 and achieved notable success by winning five medals at the Taipei Capital Cup 2026.
The Skill India Mission is actively building a comprehensive preparation ecosystem characterized by strong industry partnerships, expert mentorship, structured training programs, and valuable global exposure. India’s enlarged participation at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is a significant step forward in its ambition to establish itself as a leading global hub for skilled talent.
The new skill categories offer specific insights into emerging fields. Intelligent Security Technology involves the planning, installation, and maintenance of advanced systems employing AI-enabled surveillance, intelligent sensors, and automated response mechanisms for enhanced protection. Landscape Gardening integrates design, construction, and environmental principles to create sustainable and functional spaces.
Optoelectronic Technology, a rapidly expanding domain, merges the science of light and electricity, finding applications in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, communications, and intelligent technologies. Digital Interactive Media Design focuses on creating engaging digital experiences across various platforms by combining design, content, and emerging technologies.
Retail Sales emphasizes customer engagement and experience through product knowledge, communication, and service excellence, reflecting modern business models. Heavy Vehicle Technology demands advanced diagnostic and repair capabilities for increasingly sophisticated mobility and industrial systems. Unmanned Aerial Systems highlight the growing utility of drone technology across sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, and public services.
Dental Prosthetics involves the precise design and production of specialized dental devices like crowns, implants, and dentures to restore oral function. Industrial Mechanics pertains to the assembly, maintenance, and optimization of complex industrial machinery. Software Testing is crucial for ensuring software quality and reliability through rigorous validation processes. Aircraft Maintenance focuses on the inspection, servicing, and certification of aircraft systems to guarantee safety and regulatory compliance.
