National Conference (NC) leader and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Salman Sagar has issued an apology on behalf of party colleague Tanvir Sadiq, following controversial remarks made by the latter regarding poverty in Kashmir during the era of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. Sagar stated that the issue should not be prolonged further.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the controversy stemmed from remarks attributed to Tanvir Sadiq, suggesting that poverty in Kashmir during Sheikh Abdullah’s time was so severe that an entire village might have shared a single pair of trousers. These statements reportedly caused offense to some sections of the public.
Salman Sagar addressed the controversy, asserting that an apology is warranted if Sadiq’s comments have hurt people’s sentiments. He clarified that Sadiq’s remarks were not intended to demean the people of Kashmir. Instead, Sagar explained, the intention was to highlight Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s efforts towards the economic empowerment of the region’s populace. He specifically referenced initiatives in education, infrastructure development, and land reforms undertaken during that period.
Sagar emphasized that Sadiq’s statements were meant to underscore the progress made and the developmental efforts initiated by Sheikh Abdullah, rather than to insult or disrespect the Kashmiri people. He indicated that the National Conference respects the sacrifices made by the community and that Sadiq’s comments were a reflection on historical hardships and subsequent efforts for upliftment.
The NC MLA also commented on the upcoming Assembly session, expressing the party’s intent to raise public issues and ensure that matters of public welfare are prominently discussed on the legislative floor. The party aims to advocate for the needs and concerns of the people of Jammu and Kashmir during the session.
