Earth Sciences New Zealand, the nation’s consolidated public research organization focused on geological and atmospheric science, has engaged with senior representatives from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The briefing, held on September 9, 2025, focused on enhancing disaster risk reduction and resilience strategies across New Zealand and the wider Pacific region.

Merging Expertise for Enhanced Resilience

The Chenab Times has learned that Earth Sciences New Zealand was officially formed on July 1, 2025, through the strategic merger of two prominent research institutions: GNS Science and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). This consolidation aims to leverage combined expertise to address critical challenges in energy security, sustainable resource management, and resilience against natural hazards and climate-related risks.

During the briefing with UNDRR officials, including the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Kamal Kishore, staff from Earth Sciences New Zealand and MetService presented approaches to mitigating risks and strengthening resilience. Discussions covered a range of multi-hazard early warning systems, addressing threats such as tsunamis, earthquakes, cyclones, flooding events, and other climate-driven impacts.

Broad Mandate for Earth Sciences New Zealand

The organization’s mandate extends across a comprehensive spectrum of earth and climate sciences. Its core objectives include fostering economic growth through the sustainable management and innovative research of marine, freshwater, energy, and mineral resources. Concurrently, it endeavors to bolster resilience by reducing the impacts of natural hazards and climate change, supporting both adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Earth Sciences New Zealand also prioritizes the stewardship of ecosystems and biodiversity, alongside developing robust strategies for managing geological hazards, extreme weather events, and coastal impacts. The organization plays a crucial role in advancing the understanding of land and marine geological processes and supporting the growth of renewable energy sources.

With approximately 1,200 staff spread across various locations in New Zealand, Earth Sciences New Zealand aims to provide evidence-based analysis and advice to decision-makers at all levels. This strategic integration of research capabilities is intended to create a world-class entity capable of tackling New Zealand’s unique earth science opportunities and challenges.

The engagement with the UNDRR underscores New Zealand’s commitment to contributing to global disaster risk reduction efforts, sharing its scientific advancements and lessons learned in managing diverse environmental threats.
