Southern Railway Achieves 100% Electrification of Broad Gauge Network

Southern Railway has successfully completed the electrification of its entire broad gauge network, a significant milestone in its transition towards sustainable and energy-efficient operations. The zone achieved this by electrifying the final 71-kilometre stretch between Pattukkottai and Karaikkudi. This accomplishment means that trains operating within the Southern Railway network can now seamlessly run on electric traction without the need for switching to diesel engines on unelectrified sections.

Milestone Achieved After Decades of Work

The completion of the Pattukkottai-Karaikkudi section marks the culmination of a long-standing electrification programme. With this, Southern Railway’s entire 5,068 route kilometre broad gauge network is now under electric traction. This achievement is expected to simplify train operations, enhance the utilisation of electric locomotives, and improve operational flexibility across the zone. It also signifies a substantial reduction in dependence on fossil fuels.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Southern Railway has a long history of electric traction, with its introduction in Madras dating back to May 11, 1931. This made Madras the second metropolitan city in India, after Bombay, to adopt electric train systems. The recent push for electrification has seen major routes across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry transitioning to electric traction in recent years.

National Push for Electrification

This achievement by Southern Railway aligns with Indian Railways’ broader objective of achieving 100% electrification of its broad gauge network. As of May 31, 2026, Indian Railways had electrified 99.6 per cent of its total broad gauge network, covering 70,002 route kilometres out of a total of 70,271 route kilometres. This makes India the second most electrified major railway system globally, trailing only Switzerland. The electrification drive has been significantly accelerated over the past decade, with 48,072 route kilometres electrified between 2014 and 2026, compared to 21,801 route kilometres electrified in the six decades prior.

The Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that electrification is now an integral part of all new railway line and multi-tracking projects. This mission-mode approach has led to substantial reductions in diesel consumption, resulting in considerable savings in foreign exchange spent on importing fossil fuels. Diesel consumption for train operations has reportedly declined from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25.

Environmental and Operational Benefits

The complete electrification of Southern Railway’s broad gauge network is expected to yield significant environmental benefits by reducing carbon emissions. Rail transport is already a considerably lower emitter of carbon dioxide compared to road transport, and electrification further enhances this advantage. Additionally, the shift to electric traction reduces the reliance on imported fossil fuels, thereby bolstering India’s energy security.

Operationally, the seamless electric traction across the network is anticipated to improve efficiency and reduce transit times for both passenger and freight services. While 15 railway zones, including Central, Northern, Eastern, and Western Railways, have already achieved 100% electrification, Southern Railway’s accomplishment marks a crucial step towards the national goal. Some sections, such as the Mettupalayam-Udagamandalam heritage mountain railway, are technically unfeasible for electrification and remain exceptions.
